- Predictive analytics forecasts future outcomes from historical patterns and current signals: which customers are likely to churn in the next 90 days, which transactions are likely fraudulent, what demand volume to expect next quarter. Predictive analytics enables proactive intervention — acting before outcomes are fixed rather than analyzing them after the fact.
- Prescriptive analytics recommends the optimal action given a predicted outcome: not just which customers are at risk, but which retention intervention has the highest expected value for each specific customer segment. Prescriptive analytics closes the loop between insight and action.

What Makes Analytics Predictive
Predictive analytics is not a product you install — it is a capability you build. The technical components that distinguish predictive from descriptive analytics require deliberate design decisions at each stage of the model development lifecycle.
Feature engineering is the process of transforming raw data into the input variables (features) that predictive models learn from. Feature engineering requires deep domain knowledge — understanding which data signals are causally or correlatively related to the outcome being predicted, and how to represent those signals in forms that models can use. The quality of feature engineering is frequently the primary differentiator between models that perform well and those that do not, more so than model architecture selection.
Model selection involves choosing the algorithm or model family most appropriate for the prediction task, data characteristics, and operational constraints. The choice between interpretable models (decision trees, linear/logistic regression, gradient boosting) and more complex approaches (deep learning, ensemble methods) is driven by the explainability requirements of the use case, the volume and quality of available training data, and the latency requirements of the production scoring environment. For regulated industries — financial services, healthcare, insurance — interpretability is frequently a compliance requirement, not just an engineering preference.
Training data governance ensures that the data used to train models is representative, well-documented, and free of the biases and quality defects that would degrade model performance or introduce discriminatory outcomes. Training data provenance — knowing exactly what data was used to train a model, from which time period, with which preprocessing steps — is required for model validation, audit, and the investigation of model performance issues.
Validation methodology tests model performance on data the model has not seen during training, using evaluation metrics appropriate to the prediction task and business context. A model with impressive accuracy on a metric that does not align to business value is not a useful model. Validation methodology must also test for performance equity across demographic subgroups for models making consequential decisions about people.

The Data Foundation Requirement
Every predictive analytics engagement begins with a data readiness assessment of the specific data assets required for the target use case. This is not a formality — it is the work that determines whether the predictive model will be reliable enough to act on.
Predictive models learn from historical patterns in data. If that data is incomplete, the model learns from a partial picture. If it is inaccurate, the model learns incorrect patterns. If it is inconsistently defined — the same business term measured differently across systems or time periods — the model learns noise rather than signal. If it lacks sufficient history, the model cannot distinguish genuine patterns from short-term fluctuations.
This is why data governance is a prerequisite for predictive analytics — not a parallel workstream, but a prerequisite. Organizations that attempt to build predictive models on ungoverned data spend the majority of their project time on data cleaning and reconciliation, produce models with questionable reliability, and cannot explain to stakeholders why model performance varies between validation and production environments.
The data foundation assessment for a predictive analytics engagement covers: availability and completeness of required data domains, historical depth of available training data, consistency of key variable definitions across source systems, data quality profiles for critical features, and the existence of the outcome variable needed for supervised model training (e.g., confirmed churn events for a churn model, confirmed fraud labels for a fraud model). Performance monitoring tracks model output quality against defined thresholds in production. For forecasting models, monitoring covers forecast error metrics against actuals. Monitoring requires ground truth data — actual outcomes against which predictions can be evaluated — which requires operational processes designed to capture and route that data back to the model monitoring system.
Drift detection monitors the statistical properties of model inputs over time. Input drift — changes in the distribution of feature values — is an early warning signal for potential model performance degradation, detectable before outcome data confirms the problem. Concept drift — changes in the relationship between inputs and outputs — is more consequential and requires model retraining or replacement to address.
